The HSJ Patient Safety Awards acknowledges the hard-working teams and individuals across the UK who are continually striving to deliver improved patient care.
Following the thorough judging process, WCHC was included in the 206 organisations, projects and individuals that made the final shortlist amid 415 entries logged for the 2024 awards programme.

Best Use of Integrated Care and Partnership Working in Patient Safety Award:
“In 2022 Wirral had among the highest rates in England for prescribing and admission to hospital for Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) particularly in those aged 70 and over. Wirral system partners are working together to reduce the incidence of UTI in people aged 65 and over, improve diagnosis and management of UTIs, improve hydration and contribute towards reducing antimicrobial resistance.
The project includes, development and implementation of assessment tools, training packages, engagement sessions and health promotion.
Outcomes have included a reduction in local antibiotic prescribing related to UTIs in aged 70+ years and a reduction in hospital admissions for UTIs.”
Virtual or Remote Care Initiative of the Year:
“The Children’s Speech and Language Therapy and Dietetics teams are using Remote Clinical Monitoring (RCM) to supplement the traditional delivery model. RCM enables families of children to take a short video of their child eating/drinking, communicating in their natural environment and share with the clinician so they can remotely view, analyse it, and provide advice based on what they have seen.
Services are faced with increasing referral numbers and complex cases. They needed to work differently, enhancing capacity. RCM has supported by evidencing efficiency savings whilst optimising clinical outcomes, safety and experience.”
The Awards are a highlight of the HSJ’s annual 2-day Patient Safety Congress (taking place on 16 & 17 September), where delegates working at the forefront of safety, quality and clinical excellence come together to join in on open and honest discussions about the current reality of safety.
Winners will be announced during the awards ceremony at Manchester Central on Monday 16 September.
